Beckhoff implements open automation systems based on PC-based control technology.
Founded in 1980 and now a world leader in automation, Beckhoff owes its success to its continuous development of innovative products and solutions using PC-based control technology. Many automation technology standards that are taken for granted today were conceptualised by Beckhoff at an early stage and successfully introduced to the market.
A genuinely holistic approach to Industry 4.0 requires horizontal integration across company boundaries, vertical integration through networked production systems, and integrated engineering throughout the product lifecycle. PC-control offers the right solution for all this, flexibly adapting to varying application requirements. Intelligence can be arranged in a hierarchically modular fashion under the central controller, but also be decentralised.
Beckhoff’s solutions include industrial PCs, I/O and fieldbus components, drive technology and automation software. These can be used as separate components or integrated into a complete, seamless control system and are available for all industries.
Beckhoff’s ‘New Automation Technology’ philosophy is represented by universal and open control and automation solutions used worldwide in a wide variety of different applications, ranging from CNC-controlled machine tools to intelligent building automation. Industries include automotive, packaging, manufacturing, printing, robotics, renewable energy and building automation, to name a few.
Training is offered in Beckhoff’s head office or on-site, giving customers the confidence required to control their own projects.

NORD is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of drive technology for mechanical and electronic solutions.
NORD’s Industry 4.0 ready range of drives includes geared motors, motors, industrial gear units, frequency inverters, motor starters and frequency inverters for decentralised drive control – all ready to play their part in the Smart Factory.
The networked drive units communicate their status data via the control system or directly into the Cloud. Being stored in the Cloud, the data is available worldwide for evaluation and analysis.
Frequency inverters with integrated PLC functionality play a crucial role in this. The integrated PLC processes data from sensors and actuators and, if necessary, initiates a sequence control and communicates high quality drive and application data to the control centre and networked components.
Thus, the entire system of NORD drives can be monitored. The data collected can be used, for instance, to determine the maintenance condition (predictive maintenance) and drive capacity. This enables planned maintenance work that can be carried out as necessary, taking into account the current production workload.
This results in faster service, reduced downtimes and maintenance costs, as well as longer service life of the drive.

SMC is a global manufacturer of advanced pneumatic control devices and IO-Link compatible products specifically developed for Industry 4.0.
SMC understand the need that manufacturers have to integrate machinery at component level to orchestrate a symphony that makes the man-machine collaboration tick. The company has developed a range of products that communicate via IO-Link. IO-Link allows the network communication and provides the smarts for sensor to be able to relay diagnostics and pass information upstream as well as receive information downstream.
These products contribute to solutions that increase overall equipment effectiveness, improve energy efficiency and assist in agile manufacturing – ultimately, improving production efficiencies and profitability.
SMC prides itself on walking the journey with its customers. The company has taken a practical approach to Industry 4.0 and developed a four-stage process to help implement these solutions. This process comprises: understanding the drivers for change, conducting a digital maturity check, identifying key enablers and developing a road map for deployment.
